I was in charge of my life here on earth—the day-to-day stuff, I mean. During the month that I was hospitalized I received hundreds of letters and calls from folks pulling and praying for me. One day a letter arrived from Eddie Walker. He said he had been at the scene of my accident. But then he went on to profess his faith to me, how Christ had turned his life around, and how he felt the Lord had protected me that night, protected me for a reason.
As much as I’d like to blame you for what’s happened to me, our relationship started out with good intentions and just imploded itself. They say it’s not something that consciously happens, and it really was out of my control. But with help from a lot of caring people, I’m taking control of my life again. As much as it hurts to walk away from you, I’ll always try to remember the good times of my life and put the bad times behind me. This is a study about health and alcohol consumption among young to middle-aged men.

I believe that this is the best decision for me.
“Love/Hate Letter To Alcohol” by Post Malone (ft. Robin Pecknold)
It was the alcohol that lubricated my insecurities and fears, that made life just a little less daunting and numbed any bad feelings I might have. Thank you for the good memories and I’ll try to forget the bad. They deserve me without you tagging along. And who knows, if I’m ever old and alone, we may meet again.

You’ve had such a strong grip on me that I don’t even know who I am today. After all the good times we spent, you ended up ruining my life. Because of you, I’ve spent nights in jail, I lost my license, my job, my marriage, and my kids won’t speak to me. We are no longer taking on your name as we move away from you either.

Among the things I took with me for the month’s stay in the rehab was Eddie Walker’s six-page letter. I had never been able to get it out of my head, and I often reread it, even when I was drinking. In fact, I began carrying it in my briefcase. It didn’t upset me; I knew all about God and Jesus. It’s just that I didn’t have much use for Eddie’s type of faith.

- I realized they all came as a result of my interactions with you.
- Bad decisions are far and few and if I do happen to make one it’s comforting to know you had nothing to do with it.
- I wanted to be a new man, and I had more or less proved to myself that I couldn’t do it alone—and the best thing for me to do was to get out of the way and let God take over.
It was only natural that I went after my recovery from the accident tooth and nail, to be as successful at that as I had been at everything else. That’s the way I felt about not drinking too. I was going to stick to my pledge come hell or high water. I’d happily drink the night away, and you’d leave me to rot. Another memory stolen, another promise broken. You lied once again, just like you did every single day.
If you are ending drinking for someone else, be sure to offer help. Offer to connect that person with resources like addiction recovery programs or Alcoholics Anonymous.
