About Stop Diabetes Movement (SDM)

Stop Diabetes Movement (SDM) is a community (Public – Private Partnership) effort to prevent India from becoming the world capital of Diabetes Mellitus using the Integrated Approach of Yoga Therapy (IAYT). SDM envisages identifying, motivating, training and organizing – Volunteers (organizers), Diabetes patients, Yoga Instructors, Doctors and Researcher. VYASA Trust and Swami Vivekananda Yoga Anusandhana Samsthana (SVYASA) a Yoga University, Bangalore has undertaken this ambitious nationwide program “Stop Diabetes Movement” to bring down the growth of diabetes in India.

Aim of SDM: SDM aims at bringing down the growing curve of diabetes in India, using Yoga based Lifestyle intervention.

Objectives

Primary prevention: Prevent Pre-diabetics to become diabetics and

Secondary prevention: Preventing the complications; converting diabetes condition from severe to moderate, moderate to mild, and from mild to normal

Yoga for Diabetes :

Yoga helps in prevention and management of diabetes by lifestyle change (diet, exercise, habits and stress reduction) through mind management. Nearly 100 research publications in indexed international journals from around the world has shown that, yoga helps in several ways:

Diabetes is a major Non-Communicable Disease, posing threat to the human community and exchequer of the globe. India is going to be the global capital for diabetes by 2025. It is right time that all the nations shall awake in controlling the epidemic before its holocaust has devastating effect on the human race.

Our Hon’ble Prime Minister, Sri Narendra Modiji, a visionary for the welfare of the countrymen, is encouraging our ancient traditional systems of evidence based holistic health (Yoga based life style change) for preventing and managing many Non-Communicable Diseases such as Diabetes, Hypertension, Cancer, Obesity, Mental Health etc. With a view to promote the same effectively, a separate ministry of AYUSH is established under the Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent Charge) Sri Sripad Yesso Naik. The AYUSH ministry since, declaring 21st June as International Day of Yoga, has unveiled various programs both at National and State level for promoting traditional Indian systems of Holistic Health.

Taking in to consideration, the percentage of population reeling under diabetes and to prevent the nation from becoming the Diabetic Capital of the World, the Ministry of AYUSH has planned various projects involving both Governmental and non- governmental institutions working for this social cause.

During the 2nd international day of yoga (21st June 2016) held at Chandigarh, our prime minister gave a clarion call to all yoga institutions to focus this year, on taking up several programs to promote yoga for diabetes . On this basis, Ministry of AYUSH, New Delhi, has planned this mega nationwide project to control the increasing prevalence of diabetes in India through yoga based life style program called Niyantrita Madhumeha Bharata abhiyaan (NDCP- national diabetes control program), routed through central council of research in yoga and naturopathy, New Delhi, and implemented by the Indian Yoga Association (IYA). IYA is an association that has members from all major traditional yoga paramparas of the country.

Madhumeha Mukta Bharat MMB

Madhumeha Mukta Bharat (MMB) is one of the important mission initiatives of VYASA Bengaluru, Technical support by S-VYASA Yoga University Supported by Arogya Bharati and Indian Yoga Association to spread awareness about diabetes and preventing diabetes among the Indians across the country for the well-being of the nation, using ancient holistic approach by Yoga. It is an ambitious movement to prevent India becoming “Diabetes capital of the World”.

Suggested by our Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi ji and supported by 177 member countries, June 21st has been declared as the “International Day of Yoga” by United Nations Organizations (UNO). On this occasion, Yoga Saptaha was planned where Yoga camps for prevention and Management of Diabetes were organized throughout country covering around 600 districts.

Need of SDM-MMB

✓ Type 2 Diabetes (DM2) has reached epidemic proportions.
✓ India is going to be the global capital for diabetes by 2025.
✓ In India, 61.3 million people are affected by DM2; it is estimated that it will rise to 101.2 million, by 2030.
✓ One in every five diabetics in the world is an Indian.
✓ Gradually DM2 is becoming more dangerous than AIDS.
